Botox temporarily relaxes targeted muscles by blocking nerve signals to them, softening the lines those muscles create.
Distant spread of toxin effect: In rare cases the effects of botulinum toxin may spread from the injection area, causing symptoms such as trouble swallowing, speaking, or breathing hours to weeks later. Seek immediate care if these occur.
What it treats
- Temporary improvement of moderate-to-severe frown lines, forehead lines, and crow's feet in adults
Who shouldn't take it
- Infection at the planned injection site
- Known hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin product
- Neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis, ALS, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
